Straighten Your Teeth, Broaden Your Smile
Orthodontists are specialized dentists that focus on straightening teeth. They work with patients to treat improper bites, crooked teeth or jaw problems. Orthodontists can also assist with issues like TMJ, plus there are surgical orthodontic options available.
Orthodontics for Children
It’s most important to get to dental issues that need an orthodontist early in life, so we recommend that children see an orthodontist before turning 7. At this point in a child’s life, permanent molars and incisors have typically grown in, so orthodontists can better determine which treatments will be needed. Our children’s friendly dentist is familiar with the early stages of orthodontic teeth straightening and can recommend the best time to start seeing the orthodontist.
Orthodontists usually treat children by use of two-phase treatment. The first phase utilizes a limited appliance before permanent teeth have erupted, while the second phase uses a stronger appliance, like full braces. Early treatments allow for the correction of:
- Abbnormal swallowing or speech problems
- Inadequate space for permanent teeth
- The effects of thumb-sucking
- Issues with the width of the upper and lower dental arches
Orthodontics for Adults
Misaligned teeth aren’t just an issue for children. If, as an adult, your teeth are not aligned properly, your teeth can wear down too quickly, causing bone and gum loss. A crooked bite can also cause headaches and jaw pain. You’re never too old to correct your smile.
Options for Orthodontics
Braces: Braces can be used for adults, but most commonly, braces are used for children between the ages of 9 and 14. Braces are generally worn for 1-2 years, but individual results vary.
Invisalign®: Invisalign® is a popular option for adults, because it uses clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten teeth. It is more comfortable, and it tends to be a faster solution, but it isn’t considered the best choice for children, because Invisalign® requires a great amount of self-discipline.
